Be Different (Everyone Else Is Doing It)!
"I realized that my strength was being different!"
Being different is actually the most radical form of rebellion you can choose!
"Be different, everyone else is doing it" might sound like a contradiction, but in a world that thrives on imitation, it is actually the most radical form of rebellion you can choose.
We spend most of our lives trying to fit into boxes we didn't build. We chase milestones that belong to someone else. From the way we work to the way we define success, there is a heavy, silent pressure to follow the proven path. However, the more we mirror the crowd, the more we lose our own reflection. Personal growth isn't about perfecting a template. It's about the messy, rebellious process of unlearning who you were told to be. In a world of carbon copies, reclaiming your own weirdness isn't just a choice, it's the only way to actually feel alive.
If you're with me so far, let's dive into to being different. We're going to examine three pillars that define your ultimate guide to being different. Here's a brief outline of the pillars:
- The Branding Trap - this is consideration of why best practices will often lead you to boring results and how you find your uniqueness, your x-factor.
- Creative Rebellion - learn how to stop asking for permission and start building a life or career that doesn't look like a template you would find in corporate propaganda.
- The Bravery Tax - what is the social costs and discomfort of being the 'weird' one and why the payoff is worth the price.
Let's take a deeper dive into the pillars of being different. When we're done, you'll understand what it means to break the rules and still win. You'll know why the world accommodates those who fit in, but rewards those who stand out.
Section 1: The Personal Branding Trap
Most people treat personal branding like a template of buzzwords and polished headshots. But a real brand isn't a marketing byline or catchy tagline; it's an expression of who you are, not just what you do.
To build a brand that actually stands out in a crowded arena, you have to lean into the things that make you 'too much' for some people.
- Stop being polished, start being human - people will connect with your messy beginnings and successful failures far more than your highlight reel. Sharing a challenge you are currently facing builds authentic trust faster than any mainstream conformity ever could.
- Identify your core - this is your set of values that should guide everything you do, whether they are transparency, innovation, or humor. If you don't stand for something specific, you'll end up standing for nothing and blend into the vanilla crowd.
- Become the limelight - don't wait for the 'big break' to be seen! When you show up consistently with your uniqueness, you don't just find the spotlight, you become it!
Section 2: Creative Rebellion
It's about building a life or career that isn't a template. Most life or career advice is a recipe for mediocrity. It tells you to follow the proven path, which is really nothing more than a crowded highway leading to the same destination everyone else is reaching. Creative rebellion is about off-roading.
- Kill the best practices - if you follow the industry standard, you will produce the industry standard. To be different, you have to look outside your niche for inspiration. For example, a graphic designer should study architecture. A writer should study stand up comedy (I try this on occasion with my wife, who just rolls her eyes). It's really about cross pollinating your skills to create a category of one.
- Stop asking permission - the old world required a gatekeeper to tell you that you were ready. In the world today, the only gatekeeper left is your own hesitation. Start the project, launch the site, or publish your first book before you feel qualified.
- The power of no - being different is defined as much by what you don't do as what you do. Turning away from 'good' opportunities that don't align with your unique vision is the only way to make room for great ones.
Section 3: The Bravery Tax
It's the cost of being different. There is a tax on being different, and it's usually paid in the form of social discomfort, raised eyebrows, and the fear of being judged. Most people quit here because the safe path feels better.
- Action is the antidote - courage isn't a feeling you wait for. It's an action you take while you're still shaking. The fear of standing out only dissipates once you actually step into the spotlight.
- Reframe the discomfort - that knot in your stomach isn't a warning to stop. It's a signal that you are doing something that matters. If your work doesn't make you at least a little nervous, you're probably just echoing everyone else's work.
- Find your tribe - being different doesn't mean being alone. Once you start being authentically weird, you'll stop attracting the masses and start attracting the specific people who have been waiting for someone exactly like you.
Let's be real for a moment. The world out there is obsessed with best practices and the human condition of set templates. The safest bet often feels like following the crowd, blending in. But that only leads you to become part of the background noise. This isn't unusual as we were taught early in our life to fit in, to mirror the leaders around you, and to play by the established rules of the game. However, when everyone else is zigging, the most radical and rewarding thing you can do is zag. The true impact on your life doesn't come from being a slightly better version of someone else. It comes from the courage to be the only version of you!
Fitting in is a survival instinct, but standing out is a success strategy. In this world, the hard truth is our environment tries to make you a photocopy of those around you. Your only real competitive advantage is your refusal to conform. You don't need to shout to be heard. You just need to stop whispering what everyone else is already saying. So, take the risk of being misunderstood, embrace the 'bravery tax', and own your weirdness. The world has enough clones, but it's waiting for you to differentiate yourself from everyone else. Be different, ...
Be inspired! Inspire others!
