The Wisdoms of Life: Imperfection (Excellence Over Perfection)
"The wisdom in imperfectiton is outgrowing what you thought possible, achieving your best regardless of the world's expectations."
- All Things Inspired LLC
We often treat perfection as a destination, yet it is more like a mirage!
The third wisdom, Imperfection (Excellence over Perfection), serves as the bridge between having the courage to act and the grace to sustain that action over time. While perfectionism is an unattainable standard often rooted in a fear of judgment, the wisdom of imperfection focuses on the "broadening journey" of growth and continuous improvement.

If Presence teaches us to stand still and Resilience teaches us to pivot, Imperfection teaches us to keep walking. We often treat perfection as a destination, yet it is more like a mirage; a shimmering ideal that recedes the closer we get, leaving us exhausted and paralyzed by the fear of a 'wrong' move. The wisdom of imperfection is the radical realization that 'good enough' is not a compromise; it is the catalyst for progress. By choosing excellence over perfection, we trade the crushing weight of flawlessness for the vibrant energy of evolution. It is in our cracks and missteps that we find the raw material for our most authentic work and the space for true connection with others who are equally, beautifully human.

There are parallels in our universe of human connection that although we are on individual journeys, we sometimes cross paths of familiarity that can alter us in emotional and physical ways. But remember that regardless of our interconnections in life, we are still perfectly imperfect. Yet, we are perfect for the requirements of our journey.

To move from the paralysis of perfection to the momentum of excellence, let's explore ways to lower the stakes for you. Here are three practical techniques to help you embrace the Wisdom of Imperfection:

1. The 70% Rule (also referred to as "The Good-Enough Threshold")
Perfectionism often leads to diminishing  returns. You spend 80% of your time on the final 5% of details that most people won't even notice.
  • The Action: Challenge yourself to complete a task to 70% of your "ideal" standard and then ship it, share it, or move on.
  • The Wisdom: This forces you to prioritize impact over polish. It teaches your brain that the world doesn't end if a minor flaw exists, and it frees up your energy for the next big thing.
2. Rough Draft Thinking
The fear of a bad result often prevents us from starting. Excellence is built on a mountain of discarded "first versions."
  • The Action: Label your efforts as a "v0" (version zero) or a preliminary concept draft. When you frame something as an experiment rather than a final performance, the pressure to be flawless vanishes.
  • The Wisdom: You can't edit a blank page. By allowing yourself to be bad at the beginning, you give yourself the raw material necessary to eventually be excellent.
3. The "Wabi-Sabi" Audit
In Japanese aesthetics, Wabi-Sabi finds beauty in imperfection and impermanence.
  • The Action: At the end of the day, identify one mistake or flaw in your work or behavior and find a way that it actually added value, perhaps it led to a new insight, a laugh with a colleague or friend, or just a moment of humility.
  • The Wisdom: This trains the mind to stop seeing flaws as "damage" and start seeing them as "character."
The Foundations of Excellence: The Freedom of the "Work in Progress"
To sustain presence and resilience, we must ultimately embrace the philosophical freedom of viewing ourselves and our output as a continuous "work in progress." When we anchor our daily actions in presence and resilience, we unlock three profound philosophical shifts that transform imperfection from a liability into our greatest strategic asset:
  • Presence Disarms the "Comparison Trap": Mindfulness allows you to witness your early "v0" (version zero) mistakes with kindness rather than kneejerk criticism. By anchoring yourself in the present moment, you stop comparing your messy, unpolished internal process to the carefully curated external highlights of others.
  • Resilience Chooses Authenticity over Artifice: You cannot pivot if you are afraid to stumble. True resilience is earned in the vulnerable struggle of getting back up, proving that a meaningful, relatable life is built on raw authenticity rather than an artificial facade of perfection.
  • The "Work in Progress" Fuels the Power of Growth: Perfection is a developmental dead end because it assumes the final destination has already been reached. By accepting that your work and your journey are permanently imperfect, you maintain the open state required for continuous development, future dreams, and true invention.
To finish this topic of Imperfection, I want you to take a moment to exhale and accept where you are.

A Moment of Reflection

Think of something you have been putting off because you are afraid you won't do it right. What if you gave yourself permission to do it poorly, just to get it out of your head and into the world? Consider the possibility that your favorite people, your favorite art, and your most cherished memories are all deeply, wonderfully flawed. If you can love the cracks in everything else, why are you still trying to hide your own?

Choosing excellence over perfection is an act of profound self-liberation. It is the realization that the world does not need you to be flawless; it needs you to be active! When we trade the heavy armor of perfectionism for the light, flexible skin of a learner, we find that our greatest contributions don't come from being 'right.' but from being real. As you move forward, let your goal be progress, not polish. Let your mistakes be the evidence of your effort, and let your cracks be the places where the light finally gets in.
